RachelHi, my name is Rachel. Many would describe me as a Stay-At-Home-Mom while I tend to think of myself as a Go-Do-Something-Mom. You will generally find me taking my kids on adventures big and small. I’m closer to 40 years old than to 30 these days, and have two boys. My sweet Big D was born in 2009 and on-the-go DJ was born in 2010–yes, they are just over a year apart. I feel that everyone has a story, here is the short version of mine:

I was brought up in an abusive home until the age of 12 when my mom left my father. We lived a very nomadic life for many years and I didn’t return to school until I was almost 16. Life was pretty normal after that and eventually I married my college sweetheart. A year and two days after we were married he was shot and killed in the line of duty working as a police officer. I was devastated, living 8 hours away from my closest family and wondered if my ‘white-picket-fence’ life would ever happen.

When I least expected it I met my second husband at a friend’s wedding. It was a whirlwind romance and we married in 2005. I never thought I’d be lucky enough to find love twice. Fifteen days after we were married he was deployed to Iraq, so my ‘normal’ was going to have to wait just a bit longer. Upon his return we bought our house–yes, it had a white fence–and thought about parenthood. I miscarried our first child and after that my cycle had a luteal phase defect and it took quite a while (and a little help from Clomid) to conceive again. I was so thrilled to finally have D in 2009 and we were very surprised to be pregnant again only 6 months after he was born and DJ arrived in 2010. I’ve always wanted to be a mom so I was thrilled to embark on this adventure called parenthood!

Before being a mom I was a special education teacher, specializing in Autism. I loved working with my students and families but realized I couldn’t give 100% at work and at home. So I left my job to stay home with the boys.

My husband is a firefighter and his schedule means many days I feel like a single mom but it is our normal and works for us. My kids are my everything and I love them to no end, but 2014 is the year I will rediscover myself!

I love great desserts, a glass of wine, and cannot survive without coffee. I can’t take naps and wish I could teleport. I’m addicted to Instagram and have hundreds of DIY projects floating in my brain. I’ve never met a stranger and can’t sit still. Life is short so I don’t take myself too seriously. I hug people often and although many days I feel overwhelmed I wouldn’t trade places with anyone and am happy to be me!
